PRESS RELEASE: CLINTONS TAKE MILLIONS FROM SLUSH FUND OF TAXPAYER DOLLARS TO FUEL PERSONAL EMPIRE

CLINTONS TAKE MILLIONS FROM SLUSH FUND OF TAXPAYER DOLLARS TO FUEL PERSONAL EMPIRE

CONGRESSIONAL OVERSIGHT NEEDED ON SHOCKING ABUSE OF POWER

ALEXANDRIA, VA – It was revealed today that Bill Clinton has used a decades-old federal program to subsidize the Clinton Foundation. Since leaving office in 2001, Clinton, who along with his wife, Hillary, has earned hundreds of millions in speaking fees, has taken at least $16 million from a tax-payer supported fund originally designed to keep former Presidents solvent in retirement. According to a POLITICO investigation, this money has been funneled directly to personal business interests and even Hillary Clinton’s private email server.

The Clintons’ abuse of power and ability to defraud the country of millions of taxpayer dollars is not only shocking for how brazen they have been, but for the horrifying fact that they’re getting away with it,” said Diana Banister, executive director of Citizens for the Republic (CFTR). “The Clintons have leveraged Bill’s presidency into hundreds of millions in personal profit through speaking engagements and book deals; the audacity to cherry pick an additional $16 million from the Treasury for a pet project is almost unimaginable. And yet here we are. Somehow this is not only legal, but Congress hasn’t lifted a finger to protect the American people. We’re being asked to send these two back to the White House and yet Congress won’t provide the oversight to control them even when they’re out of office.”

Clinton’s access to the fund is made possible through The Former Presidents Act, which Congress passed in 1958 after former President Harry Truman’s financial struggles became public. “I could never lend myself to any transaction, however respectable, that would commercialize on the prestige and dignity of the office of the presidency,” said Truman in his memoirs.

“The Clintons have a long history of betraying the public trust and dignity of their offices but this latest exposure is astonishing, even for them,” said Banister. “The money should be returned immediately and Congress should act now to abolish the publicly supported slush fund from where it came. The assumption that no former President would abuse their privilege is an insult to the American people as long as we continue to elect people like Bill and Hillary Clinton.”
