CFTR TO OBAMA: STOP PLAYING CLASS WARFAREALEXANDRIA, VA – Citizens for the Republic Executive Vice President Bill Pascoe today slammed President Obama's demand for a $1.5 trillion tax increase, and urged the President to stop playing class warfare with the nation's economy.
"Barack Obama knows that a $1.5 trillion tax hike on job creators is a non-starter," said Pascoe, "and yet today he made that the centerpiece of his latest debt reduction plan – the fourth he's offered this year, for those keeping score. It's clear that the only reason he's demanding it now – under a veto threat, no less – is because he's trying to rally his liberal base in anticipation of the election next year. This kind of class warfare has no business in our politics, and the President should stop it.
"Majorities of Republicans and Independents, and even a sizable number of Democrats, have seen this President's failures for going on three years now, and have concluded it's time to make a change," Pascoe continued. "They've learned how to translate ObamaSpeak – when he says, 'We can't just cut our way out of this hole,' what he means is, 'Don't ask me to stop giving taxpayer money to Big Labor and our other Democratic Party allies.' When he says, 'It's going to take a balanced approach,' what he means is, 'I want to raise taxes while offering phantom spending cuts.' And when he says, 'It's time for everyone to pay their fair share,' what he really means is, 'It's time to raise taxes on job creators.'
"This desperate attempt to play the class warfare card would be laughable, if the stakes weren't so high. The problem is, the stakes he's playing with – our nation's economy, and family budgets – aren't his to play with.
"Instead, Congress should follow a different prescription – cut federal spending to the levels we were spending just a few years ago, then cap it. And then have Congress pass a strong Balanced Budget Amendment and send it to the states for ratification, to let the markets know Washington is serious about getting our debt problem under control.
"Our economy won't start growing again, and won't start producing the new jobs we need, as long as Barack Obama's class warfare drives Washington policy-making," concluded Pascoe.
