Reckless Democratic Climate Bill Will Cause Energy Prices to "Necessarily Skyrocket"

Republican Boehner Demonstrates Strong Leadership in Close Vote

Washington, D.C.—Citizens for the Republic (CFTR), a national conservative advocacy organization, is condemning the Democratic-sponsored climate bill that just passed the House by a 219-212 vote. CFTR contends that this legislation, which will be considered by the Senate, constitutes a massive energy tax on American families that will yield only negligible environmental results.

The controversial 1,300 page legislation, which Speaker Pelosi and the Obama Administration muscled through Congress without appropriate time for discussion and debate, will put in place a cap-and-trade system that sets strict limits on emissions of carbon dioxide. Economists are in agreement that this system will cause energy prices to rise considerably. Even President Obama admitted as a candidate that his cap-and-trade system would cause "electricity rates to necessarily skyrocket."

Republican leader John Boehner led a courageous drive to kill the bill, engaging in a rare House filibuster by reading from a monstrous 300 page amendment to the legislation. His efforts helped bring 44 Democrats across the aisle to vote against the bill.

"The climate bill is a punitive energy tax that will harm American families, especially the poorest among us," said Stephen Manfredi Executive Director of Citizens for the Republic. "This cap-and-trade system will raise food and energy prices, undermine American jobs and industry, and give foreign countries a competitive advantage over the United States while having a negligible impact on the environment," said Mr. Manfredi.

"Despite this loss in the House, Minority Leader Boehner and the Republican leadership deserve great credit for educating the public about the dangers of this bill and helping to bring 44 Democrats across the aisle to vote against it," said Mr. Manfredi. "Now we need to focus on stopping this in the Senate."
